Senior middle blocker Katie Holmes, who recently helped lead Woodland to its third consecutive volleyball state championship, is among six players named to the first team of the 2002 All-State Volleyball Team.

A total of 12 players were accorded all-state status.

Holmes is joined on the first team by Allison Sawyer of Narraguagus in Harrington, Logan Newman of Lubec, Jasmine Marie Peterson of Mount Desert Island, Katie Griffin of Jonesport-Beals, and Amanda Brown of Calais.

Second-team picks included Kelsy Snowman of Woodland, Brook Courchaine of Narraguagus, Bucksport’s Jamie Carmichael, Sara Beal of Jonesport-Beals, and Greely of Cumberland Center’s Erin Kinney and Abby Marstaller.

Holmes was a catalyst for the Dragons, converting 161 of 185 serves (.870), including 52 aces. She also registered 126 kills.

Sawyer, a senior outside hitter, was a force for the Knights. She served at 84 percent (127 of 151) and racked up 135 kills.

Newman was Lubec’s standout. The senior setter and hitter made good on 280 of 308 serves, a sparkling 91 percent, while piling up 128 aces. She also provided 71 assists.

Peterson, a senior outside hitter for MDI, kept opponents on their toes. She served at 90 percent, totaling 89 aces, while posting 81 kills and converting 87 percent of her attacks. She added 68 digs.

Griffin set the tone for the Royalettes. The junior outside hitter and blocker led the team with 73 aces, 132 kills, and 40 blocks while serving 83 percent.

Brown, a senior outside hitter for the Blue Devils, converted 93 percent of her serves, winning 148 service points. She notched 89 kills and came up with 122 digs.

Snowman was another key performer for Woodland. The junior setter posted 201 assists, served at 87 percent with 44 aces, and came up with 73 kills.

Courchaine, ‘Guagus’ senior setter, made good on 178 of 197 attempts (.904). She finished with 117 assists and 40 digs.

Carmichael, a senior middle blocker for the Golden Bucks, had 85 kills, 74 digs, and 33 aces.

Beal, a sophomore setter and server at Jonesport-Beals, led the team with 92 percent serving accuracy and 80 percent receiving success. She had 80 assists and 62 aces.

Kinney, a senior setter and hitter for the Rangers, had 28 kills, 32 aces, and 20 assists.

Greely’s Marstaller, a junior outside hitter, had 44 kills, 15 blocks, and 13 aces.
