HOWLAND – A 60-year-old Howland man died after the pickup he was driving drove off Route 116 Thursday evening and crashed into trees.

Raymond Thibodeau, the sole occupant of the 1992 GMC pickup, died at the scene, said Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter Stone. The accident is still under investigation as it wasn’t immediately known what caused Thibodeau to steer off the right side of the road.

Thibodeau was heading north and there was minimal traffic in the area, Stone said.

The road was closed during the investigation and Stone was assisted at the scene by Sgt. Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Troopers Barry Meserve and Phil Dawson.
