Jessica Bloch wins Football Forecast

Jessica Bloch earned her first Bangor Daily News Football Forecast staff title and the first ever by a woman by edging Pete Warner by a game over the course of the 10-week, 200-game challenge, while three people shared the guest crown.

Linda Coan O’Kresik of Bangor, Charlie Caron of Brewer, and Toby Nelson of Dover-Foxcroft each recorded a 17-3 week to tie for guest honors. It’s the first time more than two people have finished tied for the best record in the 37-year history of the Football Forecast.

Bloch, who finished tied for second last year and lost in a playoff two years ago to Andrew Neff, was a game ahead of Warner entering the final week. The two differed on four picks. Warner, a six-time winner, needed to get at least three correct, while Bloch only needed two or more.

Each was correct on two and Bloch was the champion. She posted a 14-6 mark in the final week for a season total of 154-46 (.770). Warner’s 14-6 record gave him a 153-47 (.765) mark. In addition to the best season records, the two also had the best final-week mark.

Larry Mahoney (13-7 in Week 10) finished third among the staffers at 150-50 (.750), followed by Neff (10-10) at 145-44 (.725), John Holyoke (13-7) at 144-56 (.720), Dave Barber (13-7) at 142-58 (.710), Don Perryman (13-7) at 141-59 (.705), and Joe McLaughlin (9-11) at 139-61 (.695).

The other guest results were defending champion Brian Brown of Millinocket at 14-6, Matt Haney of Old Town (10-10), Larry Berthiaume of Old Town at 14-6, Bill Collins of Orrington 16-4, Jim Thomas of Orrington 16-4, Mark Eldridge of Hampden (10-10), and Steve Warman of Belfast (10-10). The combined guest total was 141-59 (.705).
