UMF women in NAIA region final Woodcock scores both goals in 2-0 victory over Green Mountain

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Led by Sunrise Conference Player of the Year Megan Woodcock’s two goals, the No. 3 University of Maine-Farmington women’s soccer team advanced to the NAIA Region 10 championship Friday with a 2-0 win over No. 2 Green Mountain College.

First team all-conference goalkeeper, Alyson Pontbriand made seven saves on 18 shots for the Beavers. Fellow all-conference selections Richelle Dube and Shannon Mailhot assisted on the Woodcock goals.

The 14-3-1 Beavers will face No. 4 Holy Family College today at noon at Lyndon State College for a bid to the national tournament. The nationals will be hosted by Linwood University in St. Charles, Mo., Nov. 21-26.

Green Mountain of Poultney, Vt., finished its season at 13-5-0.

Men’s soccer

Green Mountain 1, UMF 0

At Lyndonville, Vt., the top ranked University of Maine at Farmington men’s soccer team came up short in the 2002 NAIA Region 10 Tournament as they were upset by No. 4 Green Mountain College on Friday.

The Beavers close out the season with a 12-5-1 overall record and a Sunrise Conference championship under their belts.

Fernando Donadon scored the game winning goal for Green Mountain on an assist by Paul Arigi at 33:41 in the first half. Matt Rominger earned the shutout with three saves for the 12-8 Eagles.

Ryan Hersey had five saves for the Beavers

Volleyball

Northeastern downs Maine

At Boston, Lindsay Waggner had 20 kills and seven defensive digs to lead Northeastern to the 30-20, 30-17, 30-23 win over the Black Bears.

Larissa Adomat added 11 kills while Kristin Ursillo had five service aces in addition to six kills and Kelly Cognac made 16 digs as Northeastern improved to 18-14 overall and 10-2 in America East play.

Claire Poliquin had nine kills and Carmen Gabriel made 14 digs for Maine (9-20, 3-8).

Women’s basketball

UM-Machias 69, UMPI 40

At Fort Kent, Sara Ricker’s 21 points led the University of Maine-Machias to victory over the UM-Presque Isle as part of the UM-Fort Kent Bengal Tip-Off Tournament.

Ricker went 8 for 17 from the field and 5 for 6 from the line, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists in the win. Angela Robb added 17 points and five rebounds and Gill Guest hauled in 15 rebounds.

Erica McGary led the way for the Owls with 12 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds with three steals. Sarah Nason added 10 points and Rachel Larlee had three blocks.

At Fort Kent, Nikki Brown grabbed 19 rebounds and scored eight points with one block to lead the Bengals over Atlantic Baptist in the first round of the Bengal Tip-off Tournament.

Brown’s 14 defensive rebounds were more than any other player’s total rebounds in the contest. Heidi Fisher added 10 points and eight rebounds in the win. Whitnety Zettergren led all Bengals scorers with 13 points.

Amanda Taylor led the Crusaders with 13 points and six rebounds.

Women’s ice hockey

Maine 2, Quinnipiac 0

At Northford, Conn., after being held scoreless in three consecutive games, the Black Bears earned a shutout of their own Friday when goaltender Dawn Froats stopped 26 shots.

In the first period, Maine’s Rebecca Culver used assists from Andrea Steranko and Meagan Aarts at 10:57 for a 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac outshot the Black Bears 12-10 in the second period but couldn’t put the puck into the net. The Bobcats went into the third period down by one after four power-play chances.

The 3-4 Black Bears secured their lead at 10:27 of the third period when Nicole Munro and Cindy Biron set Karen Droog up for a shot from the right side of the net. Mary Ellen Courtemanche had 29 saves for 1-5 Quinnipiac. The two teams will faceoff again tonight at 8.

South. Maine 3, New England 0

At Gorham, University of Southern Maine’s Holly Manning scored a goal and added an assist to lift the Huskies to a East Coast Athletic Conference triumph over the visiting New England College Pilgrims Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.

Southern Maine grabbed the early lead, as forward Aura Hill took a feed from Tricia Kamp off the opening faceoff, and sent a short wrister over the left shoulder of NEC goalie Jennifer Toof just 14 seconds into the game.

The goal set a school record for the fastest goal at the start of a game, breaking the former mark of 21 seconds established by former Husky Heather Hill against M.I.T. in February of this year.
