BELFAST – A city man has been charged with blasting a car and garage with a shotgun early Sunday.

Gavin Cross, 21, was arrested at his home a short time after the 3:20 a.m. shooting.

Belfast Police Chief Allen Weaver said Monday that a shotgun was fired toward the home of a woman and her adult son on the Back Belmont Road and that both were inside when pellets struck a garage and car.

Weaver said police believe the attacker stood by the road and discharged the shotgun from a driveway. Police would not give details Monday about a second man’s possible involvement in the attack.

“It is believed that the shooting was the result of a dispute over the affections of a female,” Weaver said. “It appears there was a past relationship between the victim and a female friend of one of the two subjects involved.”

Cross was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 100 yards of a residence, possession of heroin, possession of drugs without a prescription, and possession of a hypodermic apparatus. He was booked at the Waldo County Jail. Bail was set at $5,000 single surety or $600 cash.

Cross was identified by the 21-year-old man whose mother’s house was attacked. He told police that he had been involved in an altercation with Cross and another man a short time before the shooting.

Weaver said police were alerted to the problem on the Back Belmont Road by a snowplow operator who saw the occupants of two vehicles fighting and chasing one another just after 3 a.m. Sunday.

Four minutes later, a man called police to report that “two men had just been to his home and had either blown something up or shot at the house,” Weaver said.

After being told Cross’ identity, Sgt. John Gibbs and Belfast police Officer Walter Corey found Cross and another man at the Cross home on Jesse Robbins Road.

Weaver declined to identify the person who accompanied Cross. He said the man had not been charged and the extent of his involvement in the incident remained under investigation.

Although no weapon was found, “the information we have from the people involved is that it was a 12-gauge shotgun,” Weaver said.

A shotgun shell was recovered from the scene. The heroin, prescription painkiller Lorazepam and hypodermic needles were discovered during the search of the Cross home.

Weaver said a number of neighbors were awakened when shots echoed through their rural neighborhood.

He said further charges might be filed.
