Maine jobless rate remains at 4.1 percent

PORTLAND – Maine’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained unchanged last month at 4.1 percent, the state Department of Labor said.

The number of nonfarm and salary jobs rose by 2,400 from October 2001 to October 2002, the department said. Gains were recorded in services, retail trade, government and construction, but those gains were partially offset by losses in manufacturing jobs.

Maine’s jobless rate compares with 4.8 percent in New Hampshire and 3.9 percent in Vermont. Overall, the national unemployment rate last month was 5.7 percent.
