BANGOR – Three scholarships will be awarded to Maine women through the Futurama Foundation of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc.

Applications must be received by April 20. Each scholarship will provide $1,000 for school expenses.

The Rachel E. Lemieux memorial scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior or recent graduate who will attend college in the fall of 2003. Application forms are available at high school guidance offices.

A career advancement scholarship is awarded to a woman age 30 or older for an accredited college or training program of study. Application forms may be obtained from the financial aid offices of Maine colleges.

A continuing education scholarship is awarded to a woman whose postsecondary education is in progress. An applicant must have completed as least one year of an accredited college or training program, and must need to enroll for at least one more year before completion of the educational program. Masonic Learning Center for Children

BANGOR – Now in its sixth year, the 32 Degree Masonic Learning Center for Children at 116 Main St., has more than 40 students enrolled from 14 area schools and has opened a similar center in Portland with 15 children enrolled.

The two centers, established by Scottish Rite Masons, are dedicated exclusively to tutoring children with dyslexia.

“We continue to find more children with dyslexia,” said Scottish Rite Mason Royce Wheeler. “And this year we are seeing more high school students.”

The centers offer free tutoring to children with dyslexia and training in the Orton-Gillingham method to teachers. Both centers have waiting lists.

Brewer Public Libray

BREWER – The Young Adult Board of the Brewer Public Library, consisting of eight middle school pupils, sponsored a “Read-A-Thon” Nov. 8, with pizza and door prizes, at the library.

The board group, which is in its third year, offers similar programs several times throughout the year. The board’s main goal is to advise the librarian, as well as teachers, about books that will appeal to their age group. The board meets once each month to discuss new titles and to plan programs that promote reading for middle school pupils. Any pupil in grades five-eight is welcome to apply to become a board member.

Colgate University

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Kelli Wong, who is studying chemistry and biology, has been named to the dean’s list. A 1999 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, she is the daughter of Gail LeClair and Stephen Wong of Bangor.

Eastern Maine Technical College

BANGOR – On Oct. 10 Eastern Maine Technical College inducted 32 students into the Beta Beta Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges. The honors topic was “Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.” Faculty member Carol Harriman was the keynote speaker.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is open only to students who have a 3.5 grade point average.

Joyce B. Hedlund, president of Eastern Maine Technical College called membership “a recognition of the commitment to excellence that will make these students outstanding contributors to their communities. We congratulate them on this great achievement.”

Endicott College

BEVERLY, Mass. – Annie Fitzpatrick was initiated into Alpha Chi, the National Scholastic Honor Society for junior and senior students at Endicott College. She is the daughter of Mark and Ruth Fitzpatrick of Winterport.

University of Maine

ORONO – Xi Sigma Pi, the University of Maine Forestry Honors Society, will sell balsam and Fraser fir Christmas trees outside Nutting Hall noon-5 p.m. Dec. 6, 8 a.m.-dusk Dec. 7 and 9 a.m.-dusk Dec. 8. The sale benefits the honor society’s student scholarship fund.
