UNION – An Augusta woman died Thursday from injuries she suffered earlier that day in a two-car crash on Route 17, Maine State Police Lt. Jeffrey Trafton said Friday.

Emily K. Haworth, 28, was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport after the 4 p.m. crash, which closed both lanes of the busy road for three hours. She later was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died, according to police. State police are reconstructing the accident to determine speed and exactly how the accident happened. Blood alcohol tests were taken, but results will not be available for a while.

Nora Michaels, 48, of Camden was injured in the crash. She was treated at the Rockport hospital and released later the same day, according to a nursing supervisor.

The accident occurred just east of Mic Mac Market, according to Trooper Chris Tupper, the lead investigator.

On Thursday night, Tupper said it appeared that one vehicle crossed the centerline and hit the other vehicle head-on. On Friday, a police spokeswoman said it had been determined that Michaels’ vehicle had crossed the centerline and hit Haworth’s car in the 55 mph zone. The crash is still under investigation, and no charges have come from the accident.

Haworth was driving a 1989 Toyota Corolla, and Michaels was in a Volvo station wagon. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

State police and Knox County sheriff’s deputies redirected traffic while the road was shut down for the accident reconstruction.
