STETSON – A Corinna man was killed and two teenagers from Etna were injured after their car left a road and struck some trees Saturday night.
Leroy Engstrom, 25, was dead at the scene, Sgt. Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday.
Engstrom had been driving his black 1995 Saturn sedan north on Stetson Road near Route 222 when he apparently lost control on a hilly section of the road. The car struck three oak trees, Morton said.
Engstrom was pinned under the dash of the car. Two 16-year-old boys managed to get out of the car and summon help at a nearby home.
Investigators would not identify the teens as they tried to learn where they had been before the crash, Morton said.
One of the teens remained in serious condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor on Sunday night with internal injuries and was expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks. The other youth suffered head injuries but was released from the hospital Sunday.
While the accident remained under investigation Sunday, police said they believe alcohol and speed were contributing factors, Morton said. None of the people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts.
The accident was the third fatal crash the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department has handled in four weeks.
