University of Maine

ORONO – The University of Maine’s Jordan Planetarium is offering two public star shows throughout the month of December. One is an exploration of space that explains celestial speed and distance and the other gives young sky watchers an introduction to the solar system.

At 7 p.m. on Fridays, Worlds in Motion answers the question, “How fast are we really going?”

From the microscopic world of electrons zipping around the nucleus of an atom to our own galaxy zooming across the universe, this show explores how and why everything moves the way it does. Most people know how long a year is, but very few consider how fast our planet moves to complete one orbit of the sun.

At 2 p.m. on Sundays, young sky gazers age 5-8 get an introduction to our friendly solar system. We will chat with Father Sun and all of the planets that are a part of our Sky Family.

Admission is $4, $3 for children and senior citizens.

For more information and reservations call the Jordan planetarium at 581-1341 or visit umainesky.com.
