Those who benefit from donations to the Santa’s Helper Fund struggle day by day to feed, clothe and provide for their families.

Christmas is an especially difficult time for these families, according to The Salvation Army, because children often don’t understand their families’ financial situation.

The Salvation Army’s Maj. Debbie Burr has shared some of the letters accompanying applications for assistance this year. The following are excerpts from some that have been received:

“I am not working at this time and my husband got laid off in November. I also pay a lot for all of my [medications]. I just can’t afford anything for my daughter for Christmas gifts. I really need the help.”

“I’m working, but every time I try to get ahead, another bill comes in to be paid. I’m just making enough to put a roof [over our heads] and food on the table for my children and myself. I would really appreciate it if you could see it in your hearts to help me this year.”

“When I pay all my bills and buy food, I have nothing left over to buy anything. As of now, my kids have gotten so big that they have outgrown their winter clothes and stuff. I have to find a way to get warm things to wear this winter. I don’t have money to buy gifts for Christmas.”

These are just a few of the many individual stories of people who rely so heavily on the generosity of those who give to the Santa’s Helper Fund every year.

Parents find themselves having to choose between the necessities of life for their children, so toys and special amenities are luxuries they cannot afford. This is an annual tragedy for an increasingly large population.

The Salvation Army and Santa’s Helper hope you can find a special place in your hearts to feel these families’ struggles, and a few extra coins in your budgets to help the families in your own communities have a decent holiday.
