Tulane swamps Maine behind Brown, Sinville

NEW ORLEANS – Led by 6-foot-6 senior forward Nick Sinville, the Tulane Green Wave washed out the University of Maine in the first half and coasted to an 84-64 men’s basketball victory Thursday night.

Maine, now 1-2 on the season, will have Friday off before Saturday’s 6 p.m. University Hoops Classic second-round game against the University of Central Florida at Fogelman Arena.

Sinville, a transfer from the University of Minnesota, scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half and grabbed eight rebounds to help pace 2-1 Tulane, which hasn’t hosted a tournament since 1932.

Brandon Brown, who hit five of seven shots en route to a game-high 18 points, also led all players with 13 rebounds – 11 on the defensive glass. Guard Brandon Spann also scored 18 and dished out five assists.

The Wave took an 18-point lead into the locker room at halftime after shooting 53.1 percent from the field in the first half. After going 4-for-21 from 3-point range in the first half, the Bears hit eight of 16 in the second.

Maine, which was victimized by several first-half turnovers, shot 30 percent in the first half before rebounding with a 52 percent effort in the second.

The Black Bears played Tulane virtually even in the second half as the Wave barely outscored them 44-43.

Junior center Ivan Pjevcevic came off the Tulane bench for a 12-point, five-rebound effort.

Maine was led by sophomore swingman Joe Campbell of Bangor, who canned four of eight 3-point attempts on the way to 14 points. Sophomores Freddy Petkus and David Dubois each scored 13. Dubois also led the Bears on the boards with seven.

Maine was outrebounded 44-26 overall on the boards, but managed to stabilize its turnovers in the second half and finish with 15 to Tulane’s 14.

Junior guard Thomas Hill dished out five assists for Maine.

Maine, Tulane, and UCF make up one division of the segmented tourney field. The other teams are Indiana State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Southeast Missouri State.

Sunday’s games will determine first, third, and fifth places.
