NEW ORLEANS – Joe Campbell’s career-high 24 points were not enough as the University of Maine men’s basketball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 79-63 in the fifth-place game at the University Hoops Classic Sunday.

The loss was the Black Bears’ third straight in the tourney. Maine is 1-4 overall.

Campbell connected on 9 of 14 attempts from the floor including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. The Bangor High School graduate also pulled down eight rebounds.

Freshman Kevin Reed chipped in with 14 points for the Bears.

The Black Bears trailed 39-37 at the half and took a two-point lead on a Campbell basket to begin the second half. However, the Panthers reeled off a 10-0 run.

Maine fought back and pulled to within three at 58-55 on back-to-back 3-point baskets by junior Eric Dobson and sophomore Freddy Petkus with 9:42 left. But UW-Milwaukee went on a 12-1 run to put the game away in the last two minutes.

Dylan Page led the Panthers with 20 points. Clay Tucker had 16 points while Justin Lettenberger had 14 points and seven rebounds. Jason Frederick tossed in 11 points and Ronnie Jones added 10 for 3-2 UW-Milwaukee.

On Saturday, Ray Abellard and Ed Dotson provided an inside-outside combo that the Black Bears couldn’t overcome in their 72-55 loss to Central Florida.

Abellard scored 26 points, hitting on 5 of 10 from behind the 3-point arc while Dotson’s inside game resulted in 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the 3-1 Golden Knights.

Maine’s lack of inside play also showed in the rebounding statistics where Central Florida led 38-26.

Senior Clayton Brown scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds while junior Eric Dobson also had 12 points to lead the Black Bears.

Maine next travels to Clemson (S.C.) on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game with the Tigers.
