GNP shuts down machine temporarily

MILLINOCKET – A lack of orders has resulted in Great Northern Paper Inc. temporarily shutting down one of two paper machines at its Millinocket mill for about two weeks.

The production curtailment will affect at least 40 employees at the Millinocket mill. Great Northern employs about 1,100 at its paper mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket.

Brian Stetson, GNP manager of governmental affairs, said production on the No. 10 paper machine was curtailed temporarily Friday. He said the company plans to start the paper machine back up Dec. 16.

Stetson said the No. 10 paper machine produces a matte-coated paper used for school textbooks. “This is a typical slow period for that grade of paper,” he said.

He said the temporary production curtailment would have no effect on the company’s paper customers because orders are being filled with paper that already has been produced.

“We have a good order book on all of the other paper machines through the end of the year,” said Stetson.
