New lawmakers take oath of office today

The newly elected members of the Maine Legislature will be sworn in at 10 a.m. Wednesday by Gov. Angus King. Members will take their oaths in the House and Senate chambers.

Afterward, the House and Senate will elect their presiding officers, House clerk and Senate secretary. At 2 p.m., a joint convention of the House and Senate will assemble in the House chamber to elect constitutional officers, including secretary of state, treasurer and attorney general. The secretary of state oversees elections, motor vehicle regulations and corporations. The attorney general’s department is the state’s legal representative. The treasury distributes taxes, manages the state’s investments and borrows money on behalf of the state for authorized projects.

The House and Senate will reconvene in their separate chambers at 4 p.m.
