Raising the dough

Take the cake – to Christmas dinner, that is. Students Baking a Living, a licensed, student-run bakery at Fort Fairfield Middle-High School, will be taking orders for Chocolate Almond Coffee Cakes through the holidays. The dairy-free treats are made of rich challah dough wrapped around chocolate-almond filling. The cakes cost $20 each, which includes delivery by mail or to your door, and are available by calling 472-0222 (ask for Allison Beaulieu). And if you bring one to a holiday party, you’ll be sure to get an invitation next year, too.

Well-seasoned

If you’re looking for culinary inspiration, turn to “Hancock County HomeCare and Hospice Celebrates the Seasons of Our Lives,” the group’s most recent cookbook. Its cover, designed by Karen Cousins of Orland, depicts the seasons of coastal Maine, and the book includes more than 350 favorite recipes submitted by friends, patients, staff and members of the community. Cookbooks cost $12 each and are available by calling 374-5510. All proceeds will benefit Hancock County HomeCare and Hospice patient care.

Sweets for the sweet

Land O’ Lakes is buttering up holiday bakers with a free booklet, “Classic Holiday Cookies.” It includes such melt-in-your-mouth delectables as Raspberry Almond Shortbread Thumbprints and Sparkling Butter Toffee Cookies. For a free copy, call (800) 837-7702 or visit www.landolakes.com.

Brew ha ha

Raise your mug and your wineglass – the Bear Brew Pub in Orono will hold a five-course wine dinner (and beer with the appetizers) on Sunday. The dinner will feature a choice of courses, as well as wines. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. and the dinner starts at 7 p.m. It costs $40 per person, including tax and tip. For reservations, call 866-2739.
