A New York woman was in fair condition Thursday night at an area hospital after being struck by a car while walking on Stillwater Avenue in Bangor on Wednesday evening.
Carol Sproul, 56, of Ogdensburg, N.Y., was walking on Stillwater Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. when a 1998 Mercury Sedan driven by Vicki Kolenik, 46, of Bangor pulled out of the entrance of Pet Quarters and struck her, Bangor police Officer Paul Edwards said. The right front bumper of the car struck Sproul as Kolenik drove onto Stillwater.
Sproul was wearing dark clothing in a dark area. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Kolenik was not injured, but there was more than $500 in damage to her car.
An Orono policewoman avoided injury when the cruiser she was driving was struck by a deer Thursday afternoon.
Officer Casey Miller had been driving her 2003 Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser on Park Street when the deer ran out of the ditch and rammed into the passenger side of the car, Old Town police Sgt. Travis Roy said. The deer broke the passenger side mirror off the cruiser and then ran into the woods. Damage to the cruiser was estimated at $500.
A Bristol, Conn., man was arrested for drunken driving after the erratic and unsafe movements of his truck caught the attention of Bangor police Wednesday night.
Tests found that Larry A. Morgan, 37, had a blood alcohol level of 0.21 percent, whereas the legal limit for adults over the age of 21 in Maine is 0.08 percent, Bangor police Officer Stephen Jordan said. Police had pulled over Morgan’s green 2001 GMC Sierra just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Police had followed Morgan from a drinking establishment on the Odlin Road and watched as he drove 200 feet in the wrong lane before driving over a lane barrier and onto Interstate 395, Jordan said. The truck had swerved through lanes, over lines and nearly drove off the side of the road when police tried to pull the vehicle over. The truck stopped in the middle of the intersection of Route 202 and Mecaw Road, but then lurched forward and completed its turn onto Mecaw Road.
Morgan reportedly had trouble finding his ignition when told to shut his truck off and admitted that he had had five beers and felt “buzzed,” Jordan said. Morgan was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. He was later released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Jan. 6.
