KIRKWOOD, N.Y. – A man from Maine died Thursday in a snow-related car accident on Interstate 81 near Binghamton.
Authorities said Richard Handel, 52, of Mount Desert lost control of his van as he drove north on the highway Thursday morning. Police said the van crossed the median and was struck by a southbound tractor-trailer.
Handel was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he died a short time later.
Police said slippery road conditions were a factor in the crash and that the tractor-trailer driver was not hurt.
