The current controversy in Fort Kent involves a strange set of circumstances that is difficult to totally comprehend. My home is sandwiched in between the Snowmobile trail and Route 161. During the winter months my ears are alert to the sound of sleds whizzing past my back window.

It has never occurred to me that my ears are too tender for this particular “noise” and I am always glad we have snow to offer the snowmobilers along with the International Sled Dog races and the biathlon. I tip my hat to those who have contributed to the development of these activities.

At the meeting in Fort Kent Monday, the Board of Appeals voted unanimously to halt the proceeding because there is insufficient need for permits to develop snowmobile trails in local communities. Common sense and the weight of logic, being the meat of resolution, I am dumbfounded as to where this protest is headed. Many of us who abut the trail would never think of objecting to those who use the trail for snowmobiling, as we are happy to have something to offer to those who choose to visit our community.
