UMPI knocks off Clippers

PRESQUE ISLE – Dan Emerson scored 18 points to help the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls beat the UM-Machias Clippers 90-77 in men’s basketball action Saturday.

Freshman Damien Murphy added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Owls while Ricardo Munoz, also a freshman, netted 14 points.

Albert Whittaker led UM-Machias with 18 points and four assists while Courtenay Campbell chipped in with 12 points.

St. Joseph’s takes Mad Monk

At Standish Sunday, C.J. Vose tallied 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists as the Monks topped Worcester State 71-69 in the championship game of the Cole Farms Mad Monk tournament.

Rensselaer beat Elms 79-63 in the consolation game. St. Joseph’s topped Elms 68-51 Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Bilal Dawan-Abdullah added 12 points for the Monks. Jon Pratt and Justin Underwood contributed 11 apiece. Isaac Outten paced Worcester State with 17 points.

In Saturday’s game, Chad Pulkkinen racked up 11 points, 15 rebounds and six assists to lead St. Joseph’s.

Bates, Bowdoin share title

At Lewiston Sunday, the Bates College Bobcats and the Bowdoin College Polar Bears each picked up a win Sunday to share the championship of the Bates/Bowdoin Classic.

Bowdoin topped UM-Presque Isle 99-50 and Bates beat Mount Ida 100-57. The Bears rolled over Mount Ida 95-57 and the Bobcats edged UM-Fort Kent 80-69.

In Sunday’s Bowdoin-UMaine-Presque Isle game, Michael Harding paced the Bears with 14 points and Danny Ginn added 13. Dan Emerson poured in 19 points for the Owls.

In Saturday’s Bates-UMFK matchup at Brunswick, C.J. Neely netted 21 points to power the Bobcats while Angelo Salvaggio contributed 16 points. Andrew Clavette had 16 points to lead the Bengals.

Women’s basketball

Bates women win Bunyan title

At Husson’s Newman Gym in Bangor, Lauren Dubois scored 24 points, thanks to 6-for-7 shooting from 3-point land, and hauled down seven rebounds, all game-highs, as Bates captured the Paul Bunyan women’s tournament with a 92-42 win over host Husson.

Green Mountain College (Vt.) won the consolation game, 67-53 over Rivier College (N.H.).

In the championship game, the Bobcats built a 43-23 halftime lead and cruised.

They outrebounded the Braves 45-30 including a 22-6 edge in offensive rebounds.

Tournament MVP Carla Flaherty scored 16 points, dished out a game-high six assists, grabbed five rebounds and made three steals.

Holly Gracie paced Husson with 11 points and six steals, both team-highs. Meghan Hughes had seven points, three assists and three steals.

On Saturday, Husson advanced with a 59-51 victory over Rivier and Bates outlasted Green Mountain 89-79.

Husson received a game-high 23 points and four assists from Gracie to upend Rivier.

Flaherty’s 22 points and four assists keyed Bates’ Saturday win. Olivia Zurek had 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals; Lisa Golobski scored 11 points and Price had 10.

The all-tourney team was comprised of Bates’ Zurech; Husson’s Gracie and Mullenix; Rivier’s Kim Lapointe and Green Mountain’s Erica Knolhoff.
