Rowe, White strong for men, but Rams rally in 2nd

KINGSTON, R.I. – Brian Woodward scored 19 points and Rhode Island used a 10-0 second- half run to come from behind for a 69-63 win over Maine on Saturday night.

Rhode Island (5-2) trailed 50-46 with just over eight minutes to play, but Woodward’s 3-point play capped a 10-0 run that gave the Rams a 56-50 lead with 6:26 left.

Dawan Robinson, who played for the Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield’s postgraduate team in 2000-01, had five points in the run and scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half.

With just over one minute to play and Rhode Island leading 61-58, Woodward scored on a layup, then after Eric Dobson hit a free throw for Maine (2-6), Woodward hit a 3-pointer with 27.3 seconds to play for a 66-59 lead.

Dobson answered with a layup six seconds later to get the Black Bears to within five points but Robinson responded with a basket off a Lazare Adingono assist.

The Bears turned the ball over with 11 seconds left and Maine’s Kevin Reed fouled Woodward, who made one of two free throws for a seven- point lead.

Justin Rowe, Maine’s 7-foot center, put back a missed layup as time expired.

Maine jumped out to a 9-0 lead with five points from Reed, but Rhode Island battled back and there were five ties and six lead changes in the first half, which ended 30-30.

Robinson’s jump shot with 7:17 left in the game gave Rhode Island a 51-50 advantage, which the Rams did not relinquish. Maine would cut the lead to three points twice in the final 2:28.

The Black Bears were 10-for-22 from the free-throw line and 1-for-10 from 3-point range.

The Rams made 17 of their 29 free-throw attempts.

Rhode Island forced 23 turnovers, but the Black Bears held a 53-39 advantage in rebounds in the game.

Rickey White led Maine with 16 points and 13 rebounds, Rowe had 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Clayton Brown added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

White had eight points and seven rebounds in the first half.

Reed, a freshman guard who has been among Maine’s top scorers this year, was held to five points.

Dustin Hellenga had 13 points for Rhode Island.
