Seven vehicles stolen in Presque Isle

PRESQUE ISLE – Police are looking for clues into the theft of seven vehicles that were taken from residences and a business in town over the weekend.

Six vehicles, including a flat-body truck owned by a local lumber supply company, were reported stolen between midnight and 4 a.m. Saturday and the seventh was reported Sunday, according to Sgt. Laurie Kelly of the Presque Isle Police Department.

All but two of the vehicles have been recovered, she said. One of the vehicles, which was found on the State Road, was heavily damaged, she said.

It appeared that when a vehicle ran out of gasoline or became stuck in the snow, another was taken, Kelly said. The keys had been left in all of the vehicles. The doors of one vehicle had been locked but apparently a window was used to gain entry, according to the officer.

“We’re assuming it was young-age perpetrators,” Kelly said. It appeared that the person or persons involved were out “joy riding” because of the randomness of the thefts, she said.

Police have no suspects, but they have dusted the recovered vehicles for fingerprints.

Anyone who observed suspicious activity over the weekend, or who may have information about the stolen vehicles, is urged to call the Presque Isle Police Department at 764-4476.
