Dunham gets win for Rangers Former UMaine standout has successful debut in New York

NEW YORK – Former UMaine star Mike Dunham made 25 saves in his Rangers debut, and Petr Nedved scored 2:25 into overtime as New York snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory Monday night over the San Jose Sharks.

Nedved, who earlier was stopped on a breakaway, took a pass in the slot from Radek Dvorak, spun and slid a shot past backup goalie Miikka Kiprusoff. Nedved threw his hands up, looking relieved. He missed an open net that would have tied a game last Wednesday in the closing seconds of a one-goal loss to Chicago.

Dunham didn’t get off to a great start, with Patrick Marleau scoring on San Jose’s first shot against him. Matthew Barnaby tied the game for the Rangers in the second period.

It was the first time someone other than 19-year-old Dan Blackburn has started in goal for the Rangers since Mike Richter on Nov. 5. That night, Richter sustained a concussion that ended his season and led to the acquisition last Thursday of Dunham from Nashville.
