Man burned in fire

WARREN – A Waldoboro man received second- and third-degree burns Monday when gasoline he was transferring from one container to another was ignited accidentally, damaging a farm implement business on Route 1.

The fire forced the closure of portions of Route 1 and Route 90 for nearly two hours.

Fire Chief Edward Grinnell said Craig Lewis, 47, owner of Lewis Farm Equipment, was transferring the gasoline shortly before noon Monday when a spark from an undetermined source ignited the fumes.

Lewis was burned while trying to extinguish the flames, Grinnell said. He was still being evaluated late Monday at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, according to a hospital spokesman.

A spark could have come from a nearby battery charger or the oil or wood furnaces, the chief said.

Firefighters from four towns were summoned, and Routes 1 and 90 were closed almost two hours.

The fire was quickly brought under control, Grinnell said, but cleanup took some time and the crews stood by.

Grinnell was not certain of the amount of damage to the building or whether the business was insured.

Lewis’ sister-in-law, Joanne Ames, said Lewis suffered second- and third-degree burns to his side and back.

“The fire departments were wonderful,” she said. “Thank God for them and all the people” who came and helped secure the business after the fire.

About 20 firefighters came from Warren, Thomaston, Waldoboro and Union. Warren Rescue Service took Lewis to the hospital.
