Old Town police check two business break-ins

Old Town police discovered break-ins at two businesses early Monday morning when officers noticed broken front windows at local eateries.

Old Town police Officer Brent Fournier was on patrol when he noticed just before 2 a.m. that the double-paned window of the front door to Read’s Bakery, 348 North Main St., had been shattered. The owner told police that someone had been at the bakery cooking until 10:30 p.m. Sunday and he hadn’t heard anything when he went to bed in his apartment upstairs at 12:30 a.m. Monday.

The intruder apparently threw a rock through the glass and reached inside and unlocked the door, Fournier said. Nothing appeared to have been taken.

While searching the area for clues to the bakery break-in, Old Town police Sgt. Scott Casey noticed at about 2:15 a.m. that a window had been broken at Johnny’s Pizza, 370 North Main St., Casey said. Police found a piece of cement on the floor apparently used to break the takeout window.

Police also found blood on a piece of glass outside the building, Fournier said. The blood was still wet despite temperatures that hovered in the mid-20s, Casey said. Officials believe the intruder took $25 from an open cash register before unlocking a rear exit. Police followed the blood trail to Wood Street, where it disappeared.

The break-ins remained under investigation Monday.

Police had no suspects after a car burglary and vandalism were reported in Bangor on Monday.

A Dexter woman had parked her car on School Street just after 4:30 p.m. and within the next hour, someone smashed out the driver’s side window of the black 1998 Toyota RAV4 sport utility vehicle, Bangor police Officer Ed Mercier said. The burglar took a purse, valued at $25.

Also, a Bangor woman awoke Monday morning to find that the rear window of her 1999 Pontiac Transporter van had been shattered, Bangor police Officer Butch Moor said.

Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $300.
