ST. AGATHA – A Fort Kent man injured in a snowmobile accident was in fair condition Tuesday at a Bangor hospital.

Robert Bonenfant, 43, was transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center after the Monday night accident. He had been taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent by ambulance.

Warden Jeff Spencer said Bonenfant was with three other snowmobilers on ITS 83 when he was thrown from his sled after hitting a snowdrift on the trail. The four were less than a mile from the Uptown Convenience Store at St. Agatha when the accident happened.

It was 6:20 p.m. when the southbound snowmobilers were coming down a small hill in a potato field. The snowdrift, from winds on Monday and weekend snow, had accumulated to about 4 feet across the trail.

“He hit the snowdrift and became airborne,” Spencer said. “He was airborne just a short distance, but he was thrown from the sled.”

Spencer said the sled was destroyed. “He was fortunate because the sled hit a harder packed area,” he said.

Bonenfant, the Yamaha snowmobile dealer at Fort Kent, was operating a new 2003 snowsled. Spencer said the sled was valued at $9,000.

Spencer said he did not think Bonenfant had any broken bones. Spencer said he was told Monday night that Bonenfant would be kept at the Fort Kent hospital overnight.

He was flown from the Northern Aroostook Regional Airport at Frenchville shortly after midnight.
