BANGOR – You can beg all you want, but the anonymous editor of Bangor Center Corp.’s new Web site offering, the Ask Me If I Care advice column launched in July, won’t use your name if you e-mail a question. As far as the editor is concerned, you are as anonymous as he-she is to the reading public.

The advice column’s attraction, Anonymous Editor said, is that it offers snippets of useful information in a humorous and irreverent way, it appeals to the young and hip at heart, and it encourages interest in downtown Bangor.

Questions currently posted on the Web site are real questions from grown-up people, Anonymous Editor said – such as, “What exactly IS the rainbow connection?”; and, “What is the tube, where is the tube, how do you know where the tube is and-or if you’re in it?”

Now, most questions come from the greater Bangor area, but Anonymous Editor expects the column to grow in popularity and to go boldly into the farthest regions of cyberspace.

The challenge, Anonymous Editor said, is to respond with answers that encourage visits not only to the Web site but to downtown and the discovery of the businesses, services and cultural activities available there.

No question goes unanswered, Anonymous Editor said. When a single woman new to town wanted to know where to meet nice men, she was advised to hang out at Bangor Hardware. When another newcomer wanted to know a good spot for walking the dog, that person was directed to the Kenduskeag Stream trail. And a 60-something-year-old who wanted to meet attractive women was told to try the Hammond Street Senior Center.

But questions don’t have to be about pets or where to find potential partners. They can be about anything – like, “What’s the best cure for a migraine headache?”; “Why were those jets flying low over Kenduskeag Stream a few weeks ago?”; or, “How come you never see baby pigeons?”

Downtownbangor.com also offers a shopping and dining guide, information about museums and libraries, and news of activities taking place downtown. Links will take you to merchants’ and organizations’ Web sites.
