Text of statement by Stephen Cooper issued to the media Thursday morning by his attorney, Terrence Harrigan of Bangor.

There have been a number of stories, rumors and false statements circulating over the past several weeks about me. I am issuing this statement to set the record straight about my involvement with steroids.

I have never taken steroids or performance-enhancing drugs. I have worked tremendously hard on my own and under the guidance of UMaine’s strength conditioning coaches for five years. I have been tested frequently throughout my five years for steroids. Each and every test has been negative for the presence of steroids. My strength, speed and agility likewise have been tested frequently by my coaches. There have been no sharp or sudden gains in any of these categories, and any increase has been gradual because they have been solely the product of my hard work and determination. It was not the product of steroids.

Also, there are well-known, tell-tale signs of those who choose to use steroids. Anyone who knows me, has played with me or coached me will bear witness to the fact that I have never demonstrated any of these signs – ever.

My decision to possess steroids was shortsighted and selfish. My plan was to use them after the season to try and get faster and stronger, and enhance my chances of fulfilling and enhancing my lifelong dream of playing professional football. Since the time the drugs were found, I have been working with the authorities, telling them all I know and being forthright, truthful and cooperative.

I know I can’t undo what I’ve done, and I’m ready to take responsibility for what I’ve done and accept the consequences for my actions. But at the same time, I’ve let down a lot of people – my coaches, my family, my teammates and the university and its fans. To all, I want to say how truly sorry I am for disappointing you and making such a bad choice. All I can say is that it was wrong – but I want to make clear that everyone know that any success I’ve had to date has been the product of hard work and hard work alone. Please always remember that.

I have always been proud to be a member of the University of Maine community and I hope you have been proud of me. Again, I am truly sorry.

Thank you.
