BANGOR – A real estate salesperson or a business owner will tell you the same the thing – it’s all about location, location, location.

Monday night at Sawyer Arena, the Hampden Academy hockey team’s preferred location was the front of the John Bapst goal and they spent a lot of time there in an 8-2 rout of the Crusaders of Bangor.

Senior center Greg Taylor was a major force for the Broncos, scoring three goals and assisting on another, while fellow center sophomore Kevin Brooks scored twice.

Much of the Broncos’ success came through their ability to control faceoffs. Hampden Academy repeatedly created breakouts from their own end after Taylor and Brooks had controlled faceoffs to start the play.

“In practice we’ve been working on different situations, different drills, how we were going to set up,” Brooks said. “Tonight we won most of the faceoffs and, like, we capitalized on a lot of those opportunities.”

Brooks’ second goal of the night came on such a play in the third period when he directed the faceoff to Chris Bearor. The senior, who had a goal and two assists, quickly moved the puck to sophomore Mike Brown, who was racing up ice. Brown moved to the end boards and laid a perfect pass onto the stick of Brooks, who was moving through the right slot. Brooks’ one-timer beat John Bapst goalie Dan Leighton. Brown finished the night with three assists.

Adam Standley had a goal and an assist while Ian Lee and Chris Standley also had goals for the 4-0 Broncos. Hampden outshot the 0-3 Crusaders 48-11.

So dominant were the Broncos that they allowed John Bapst only one shot in four power-play opportunities.

“They’re a fast team, a strong team. They controlled the puck. Control the puck, you control play,” John Bapst coach Doug Damon said.

John Bapst scored first just under four minutes into the game when Colby Therriault punched in the rebound of David Sawyer’s shot. Kyle Maynard followed with a second-period shorthanded goal off an assist from Therriault.

Maynard’s goal brought the Crusaders to within two goals at 4-2 at the end of the period.

But the Broncos exploded for four more goals in the third period, two from Taylor.

“This is definitely a big win for us. We’ve won four in a row now. Things are going good for us,” Taylor said.

The score could have been much worse if not for the play of Crusaders goalie Dan Leighton, who stopped 35 shots.

Garrett Macgown was not as busy as Leighton, but was equally as sharp turning away eight shots.
