Hodgdon man dies from injuries in three-vehicle accident

HOULTON – A southern Aroostook County man died Thursday evening from injuries following a triple-vehicle accident earlier in the day.

Donald McGillicuddy, 79, of Hodgdon was the sole occupant of a 2000 GMC pickup struck head-on at 12:19 p.m. on Route 2 by a 1983 GMC dump truck operated by 55-year-old Robert Brewer of Houlton after the dump truck had been hit by a car attempting to enter Route 2A from Lake Road.

Danielle Deschaine, 49, of Fort Fairfield was traveling east on Lake Road and preparing to turn onto Route 2A, Dan Soucy, Houlton chief of police, said Thursday evening.

Deschaine’s 2003 Chevrolet minivan pulled directly into the path of the dump truck, which was heading west.

The two vehicles collided, sending Brewer’s truck across the centerline, where it hit McGillicuddy’s truck, which had been traveling east.

McGillicuddy was taken by ambulance to the Houlton Regional Hospital and transferred by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he died at approximately 8:30 p.m., Soucy said.

Brewer was taken to the Houlton hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The dump truck, owned by Steelstone Industries of Houlton and McGillicuddy’s truck were declared total losses. Damage to Deschaine’s vehicle was estimated at $3,500.

The accident remains under investigation by Officer Mark Ganzel of the Houlton Police Department.
