Police confirm man’s identity 23-year-old thrown from car in crash

Bangor police confirmed late Friday that the 23-year-old Bangor man who was thrown from his car when it crashed early Christmas morning on outer Broadway is Adam Stone of Bangor. He remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday night at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Meanwhile, authorities are still investigating what led up to the crash, although speed is being considered as a factor, said Bangor police Lt. Jeff Millard. He said that the result of a blood-alcohol test – which is commonly taken in severe accidents such as this – was not available for release. Millard could not comment on the blood-alcohol tests, but officials said earlier this week that they believed intoxicants were involved in the accident.

Stone was driving north on Broadway about 1:30 a.m. when he veered off the road as it curved and the car went into a ditch. Striking an embankment, the car went airborne for more than 40 feet, according to police.

The weight of the car’s engine caused the car to rotate forward and stike a utility pole several feet off the ground, roof first, causing the pole to break in two places. At some point during the accident, Stone was thrown from a window, according to police. The accident knocked out power, telephone and cable services to customers in the area and prompted police to divert holiday traffic later that morning.

When police questioned an Orono man about a two-vehicle car crash he was involved in Thursday evening, he admitted to drinking three beers and to hitting “something.”

Thomas C. Dunn, 52, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and with leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, reported Bangor police Officer James Hassard.

Both vehicles were found on Church Street about one-tenth of a mile from Essex Street, although the driver of the other vehicle said the accident occurred on Essex Street. The man told Hassard that Dunn’s Jeep Cherokee crossed into his lane, driving toward him and struck part of the plow on his pickup truck, spinning the SUV around. The SUV kept going, stopping on Church Street when its two left-side tires were flat.

Hassard reported that Dunn lost his balance during one field sobriety test and didn’t complete another.

A 23-year-old Hermon man was slightly injured after being struck by a car as he crossed a parking lot Friday afternoon.

Corey R. Reynolds was in the crosswalk by the Shop ‘n Save supermarket on Bangor Mall Boulevard when he was struck by Michael A. Morin, 32, of Portland, who told Bangor police Officer Robert Hutchings that he was blinded by the sun and didn’t see Reynolds.

Reynolds fell onto the hood of Morin’s vehicle and then onto the ground but suffered only very minor injuries, according to the police report.
