Bangor cafe owners assaulted by loiterers

BANGOR – The owners of a downtown business were assaulted Friday after they told a young couple they could not hang around inside the Main Street cafe.

Stephen Stimpson and his wife, Tina, owners of the Intown Internet Cafe, were both treated at St. Joseph Hospital after the altercation about 1:30 p.m. Friday, Stephen Stimpson said Monday afternoon.

Stimpson said he was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe concussion, a dislocated shoulder and other injuries. His wife also was struck in the head and suffered from a less-severe concussion, he said.

Bangor police reported Monday that they did have suspects in the assault, but that an arrest had not been made.

Stimpson said he and his wife recognized the man and woman as part of a crowd that hung around a park at the back of their store last summer. He said they came into the cafe just after the lunch crowd had left, but said they were not interested in ordering anything and were just waiting for the bus.

Stimpson said when his wife asked them to leave, the woman jumped up and spit in his wife’s face and struck her in the head. Stimpson came out of a nearby room and was then assaulted by the woman’s boyfriend, he said.

“He hit me on the left side of my head and then picked me up and drove into our number six computer table. Unfortunately for me, we reinforce our tables with steel rods.” Stimpson said.

Police suspect that the couple are staying at the Hope House and they have not been able to summons them because confidentiality clauses prevent Hope House staff from acknowledging who is staying at the substance-abuse treatment facility.
