ROCKLAND – A Vinalhaven lobster company and its owners are being foreclosed on by KeyBank National Association of Portland for failing to make mortgage payments.

KeyBank, formerly known as Key Bank of Maine, is seeking payment of an outstanding mortgage and interest, totaling $159,322, from Daniel F. Bickford and his wife, Lucy M. Bickford, doing business as Daniel Bickford’s Lobster Company Inc., according to a complaint filed Friday in Knox County Superior Court.

Both Daniel and Lucy Bickford declined comment Tuesday on the lawsuit.

The suit was filed by KeyBank’s attorney, Bruce B. Hochman of Portland. He could not be reached for comment.

According to the claim, the Bickfords were lent $175,000 on or about Sept. 11, 1995, in the form of a mortgage, which is secured by a parcel of land in Vinalhaven.

On Oct. 21, 2002, KeyBank notified the couple they were in default of their loan and in breach of the mortgage.

According to the complaint, the business and its owners also owe Damariscotta Bank and Trust Co. and Starlight Inc., money. KeyBank’s attorney said that any claims by these parties-in-interest should be subordinate to its claim.

The lawsuit seeks payment of the outstanding loan, plus interest, attorneys’ fees and other costs and that the property be foreclosed upon.
