Tonight at Bangor High School’s Red Barry Gymnasium a boys’ basketball rivalry will be continued when the Brewer Witches travel across the Penobscot River to take on Bangor.
Because of the natural rivalry between the schools and because the teams are two of the better teams in the Class A Big East Conference, the game will draw plenty of interest.
But the fans will enjoy the night more than the coaches, according to Bangor coach Roger Reed who will be coaching against his son for the fourth time since Mark Reed took over the Brewer program.
“Most people have a lot more interest and fun watching the game than we do probably,” Roger Reed said. “I look forward to it. Both of us have to give our best effort into the game. It’s not a win-win situation. We do it because that’s what we have to do.”
With the Reeds at the controls the games between the Rams and Witches have been close. While the father has won all four games, the total margin of victory is 29 points. Last year, Bangor beat Brewer by one and two points in their two meetings.
“All of our games with Mark have been close. It will not be an easy game,” Roger Reed said.
This year’s game will be even tougher for the Rams due to the arrival in Brewer from Calais of junior point guard Andy Frost. Frost came to Brewer when his father Jim Frost became principal at the high school.
Frost’s addition to the Witches has had a calming affect on the team. The Witches know that when Frost controls the ball it’s in good hands.
The Witches have started the season 4-0.
Brewer has had solid post play from senior Chad Gomm with seniors Jon Bell and J.T. Breindel producing points..
Bangor is also undefeated at 3-0 and has been led by the play of senior point guard Zak Ray and transfer Wes Day, who traveled up Broadway from John Bapst to become a Ram in his senior year.
Both players average near 14 points per game. Ray runs the Rams’ fast break that has been productive thus far. Day can finish at the end of the break or pull up for a smooth jumper.
The Rams have also had good production from sophomore Aaron Gallant, who has led the team in scoring in two of its three wins.
