Brewer girls plan to build on win over Rams

When the Brewer girls basketball team defeated Bangor Monday, the Witches ended a nine-game losing streak to the Rams, and an even longer streak at Bangor High’s Red Barry Gym.

Brewer defeated Bangor 62-48, the Witches’ first victory over the Rams since Jan. 28, 1998, when Brewer earned a 44-39 win against the cross-river rival Rams. That game was at Brewer High.

You have to go back to Feb. 6, 1995 for the last time Brewer beat Bangor at Red Barry Gym. The Witches won 48-33 that night.

Monday’s victory was huge for this season’s Brewer team. Not only will it provide a lift for the Witches, but it was also their third win in a row.

“The stuff that we’ve been working on, some of them for four years, they’re really starting to understand,” coach Mark Savage said. “See, girls, it works. When you do this, this is what happens. Now we have to just keep that going. We’ve got a tough one on Friday. That will be fun.”

Along with improved rebounding, Savage said he felt his team’s speed and quickness bothered the Rams. And of course, Carolyn McAvoy’s 34 points made a huge difference.

“She’s so explosive,” Savage said of the senior forward. “As they say, she’s got a nose for the ball and the hoop. When she’s on like that, you just have to let her go and do her thing.”

The Witches will try to extend their winning streak when the tough Nokomis of Newport girls visit Brewer tonight. Several Nokomis players were in the stands to scout the game in Bangor Monday.
