The Maine Campground Owners Association has announced the availability of a $500 scholarship for a Maine resident studying for a career in outdoor recreation.

This year marks the ninth year of the MECOA scholarship.

To be eligible, the student must have already completed at least one year of study in a program of outdoor recreation; must be a Maine resident; and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 at any accredited college, university or trade school that has an outdoor recreation program.

The scholarship will be awarded based upon the applicant’s scholastic records, employment record, extra-curricular activities and financial need.

The application deadline is March 21.

The Maine Campground Owners Association is a non-profit trade association representing 230 privately owned campgrounds in the state.

Fly fishers set dinner meeting

The Penobscot Fly Fishers will hold their monthly dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn on Odlin Road in Bangor on Wednesday.

A social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, a speaker, and a brief business meeting.

The speaker will be Joan Trial, who will update her latest Atlantic salmon research. The meeting is open to the public.

Snowmobile clubs rev up

As you read this, a snow storm may or may not be raging around you. But if predictions are correct, there may be some happy snowmobilers in our midst when the flakes settle.

Many of the state’s snowmobile clubs host events you may be interested in:

. On Sunday, the Pine Tree Snowmobile Club will hold a public breakfast. The breakfast (which is actually a regular Sunday event in January and February) will be held from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the club on the Outer Call Road in Milford.

. On Friday, the Nordic Lakers Snowmobile Club of Stockholm, New Sweden and Westmanland will hold a meeting in conjunction with a meal and a cribbage tournament.

. On Jan. 11, the Plymouth Snowmobile Club will hold its Speedfest Radar Run on Plymouth Pond, off Route 7. There will be 25 classes of competition, and trophies will be awarded. The event begins at 10 a.m.

. On Jan. 12, the Abnaki Sno-Riders will hold a trail safety check near the clubhouse in Madison. The check begins at 9 a.m., and the first 100 participants will receive a hand mirror that can be attached to a glove with velcro.

. Jan. 12-18 is International Snowmobile Safety Week, and many clubs are planning special events. Check with your local club for details.
