Jon Jankus, who played in nine games for the University of Maine’s hockey team a year ago before leaving after the first semester, will return to Maine for the second semester and could become eligible next fall.
He will practice with the team and will work toward becoming eligible for next fall.
Maine coach Tim Whitehead explained that Jankus, who was Maine’s youngest player a year ago at 18, had trouble adjusting to college life and its various demands, including academics.
The Stoney Creek, Ontario native, who has played junior hockey in his native Canada for the past year and expressed the desire to return to Maine.
Jankus, who can play both defense and forward, will practice with the team when school resumes.
“We’re excited about having him back,” said Whitehead. “He will bring a competitive fire that you need on a team. He’s a heavy hitter who has surprisingly good skill for a physical player. He has good hockey sense and a good shot. He is a well-rounded player.”
Whitehead said he will probably be a forward since the Bears will graduate six senior forwards, but he also likes the fact he can move Jankus back to defense and receive a quality performance from him.
The 5-foot-9, 100-pound Jankus had one goal in his nine games last season. He was the Ontario Hockey Association’s Rookie of the Year in 2000 when he had 44 points for the Hamilton Kilty B’s.
Whitehead said Jankus could play on the point on the power play.
“He will give us a real good boost in a lot of areas,” said Whitehead.
