Chinese New Year

Eat, drink and be merry at Legal Sea Foods’ Chinese New Year celebration in Boston. The event, which takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the restaurant’s Park Square location, will feature traditional crafts and demonstrations, Chinese music, dancing and calligraphy, a three-course meal, and a visit from Nina Simonds and Leslie Swartz, authors of the new children’s book “Moonbeams, Dumplings & Dragonboats.” Tickets are required for the festivities, which cost $15 for adults and $10 for children. To reserve, call (617) 783-8088, Ext. 2790.

Sow your oats

If you think you’re a tough cookie – or just that your cookies are tough to beat – enter the Ellsworth Public Library’s ninth annual baking contest, which will highlight recipes for oatmeal cookies. Entrants should bring two dozen cookies, along with their recipe, to the library by 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. Celebrity judge Jan Smith of WVII (Channel 7) will choose her favorite cookies between 11 and noon, and will help award prizes for the best entries in the children’s and adult categories. Participants must register at the circulation desk by Jan. 18. For information or directions, call 667-6373.

All Greek to you

If you’re going to see “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” at Spotlight Cinemas in Orono, skip the popcorn and try a piece of Baklava made by local restaurants as a fund-raiser for St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bangor. The decadent phyllo pastry is laden with honey and nuts, and tastes way better than a box of Milk Duds. It costs $1.50 per piece. Check Page 2 of the Style section for show times.
