Bangor
‘Les Mis’ at ArtShare
Those who missed the production of the musical “Les Mis” by students at Bangor High School, and those who want to see some of the numbers performed one more time will have their chance 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, when ArtShare meets at Bangor Public Library. BHS students and faculty will discuss their production of the Broadway musical and sing some of the songs from the show.
ArtShare also will feature directors of Winterport Open Stage and Northern Lights Theater Company, which are included in a new Rural Theater Tour organized by the Arts Council.
The program, which has just received a $7,500 Challenge America grant from the Maine Arts Commission, will send the local companies to tour new theater venues in Piscataquis and western Penobscot counties to give performances and workshops.
UCP open house
The Technical Exploration Center of United Cerebral Palsy will hold an open house at its new adaptive design center 1-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at 300 Evergreen Woods.
Participants will learn how to make adaptive materials for clients using cardboard carpentry, fabric and foam, and electronics. For information, call 941-2952, Ext. 227.
New dance company
A new nonprofit performing repertory dance company, is being formed to present a spring concert and the dance company’s names will be announced at that time.
Robert Steele, artistic director of the new company, has performed as a principal dancer or soloist with the Boston Ballet, the Washington Ballet, Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens and the Royal Danish Ballet.
His extensive teaching experience includes positions at Boston Ballet, Walnut Hill School of Performing Arts, Boston Conservatory of Music, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Washington Ballet Company and School, and many other appointments. He has been the recipient of two Pennsylvania Council of the Arts Fellowship grants for choreography.
An audition for advanced-level dancers in ballet, modern and jazz will be held 2-3:30 p.m. Jan. 11, at Thomas School of Dance, 14 State St.
Penobscot Job Corps
Eunice Johnson, center director at Loring Job Corps Center in Limestone, has been appointed center director at Penobscot Job Corps. She was the acting center director for Penobscot Job Corps in 1995. In 1998, she was director for community living at the Loring center, and in 1997, acting center director at the Blue Ridge Jobs Corps Center in Virginia.
She became affiliated with Training and Development Corp. in 1979 as an administrative assistant.
Child care training
The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer training in “Foundations of Center-based Care,” 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 18, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. The cost of the training is $10.
The training provides a basic overview of working in center-based early childhood programs. Topics focus on the role and requirements of the early childhood educator, the needs of young children, the components of quality early childhood programming and options for pursuing additional training.
Current child care providers may apply to the Penquis Resource Development Center’s Scholarship Fund for reimbursement of the fee. For information or registration, call 941-2840.
Assistant vice president
Andy Grover of Newburgh has been named assistant vice president in the retail division for KeyBank.
In his new position, Grover is responsible for providing financial products and services to new and existing consumers and commercial clients.
Previously, Grover was district manager at Southland Corp. in Portland. He also worked at Irving Oil Corp. in Bangor as an area supervisor. Grover holds an associate degree in business administration from Husson College. He also holds Series 7, Series 66, and life and health insurance licenses.
Vendors for folk festival
The organizers of the 65th National Folk Festival are accepting applications for food and craft vendors for the 2003 festival, to be held Aug. 22-24, along the Bangor waterfront.
This will mark the second of three years the festival will be held in Bangor. Last year’s festival offered a wide array of entertainment, craft and food vendors.
Festival planners want to add a number of food vendors at several key areas, according to Heather McCarthy, coordinator of the National Folk Festival in Bangor.

Bank liaison officer
Roger A. Moody recently has joined Camden National Bank as vice president for community development and government banking.
Moody will serve as the bank’s liaison with community, nonprofit and educational organizations. He also will concentrate on providing resources for government sectors at the municipal and county level to encourage local growth and prosperity.
Before joining Camden National Bank, Moody served for more than 11 years as Camden’s town manager. Previously, he worked as director of business services for the Bangor School Department and as city manager for Ellsworth.
A Vietnam veteran, he has a bachelor’s degree in history and government from the University of Maine and a master’s degree in public affairs from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y.
Winter carnival
The YWCA will hold a winter carnival for children 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2. The carnival will feature a bounce house, face painting, relay races and cookie decorating. Campaign manager
Erica Campbell has been promoted to campaign manager in the Bangor office of Gary Friedmann & Associates, a nonprofit consulting firm with offices in Bar Harbor and Bangor.
Sarah Emerson also has joined the firm as a campaign assistant.
Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Maine and a law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School, Nashville, Tenn.
Experienced in grant writing, research and project development, Campbell directs all aspects of annual and capital fund-raising campaigns for clients in the Portland, Augusta and Bangor areas. She joined Gary Friedmann & Associates as a campaign associate in 2001.
Emerson, a peace studies major, graduated magna cum laude from Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y. Her experience working with nonprofit groups ranges from environmental organizations to international human rights agencies. Emerson is responsible for writing press releases and designing marketing materials, community appeals and grant proposals.
Museum grant
Maine Discovery Museum has been awarded a $3,380 grant from the Robert N. Haskell and Gladys M. Stetson Fund, Maine Community Foundation. The grant will be used to develop new preschool programming.
Museum staff members are seeking assistance from early childhood educators, parents and caregivers who would like to help develop new preschool programming for three age groups – infant-toddler, 3- and 4-year-olds, and 5-year-olds.
The programs will bring art, science and literacy experiences to children and caregivers. Help is needed to choose the best days and times for sessions, to find age-appropriate books and activities, and to generate ideas for class themes. Assistant vice president
Tamatha Haney, manager of the customer service center and supervisor of retail services at Bangor Savings Bank in Bangor, has been promoted to assistant vice president.
Haney is a 1984 graduate of Central High School in Corinth and began her employment with Bangor Savings Bank in the fall of 1984. She was promoted to coordinator of the customer service center in 1998, and promoted to retail services supervisor in 1999. She was promoted in 2001 to manager of the customer service center.
Bank transfer
Melissa Babineau, assistant vice president, has transferred from corporate services officer at corporate services for Bangor Savings Bank in Bangor to the retail lending division as a retail lending officer in Bangor.
Babineau began her financial career in 1987 as a teller and was promoted in 1988 to customer service representative. Officials said she played a key role in establishing the corporate services division in 1998 and was promoted to client relations representative in the division in 1999. She was promoted to corporate services officer, and to assistant vice president in 2001.
Financial consultant
Lynn M. Thibeau of Bangor has joined Bangor Savings Bank’s subsidiary, Bangor Securities, as a financial consultant. With experience as a trust officer at Bar Harbor Bankshares, Thibeau will service the western and northern regions of the state. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s in business administration from the University of Maine. Thibeau also is treasurer of the Junior League of Bangor.
Management change
Hammond Lumber Co. has made a management change since acquiring the Wickes Lumber facility in Bangor. The Bangor store is now managed by Les Witham, who has been with Hammond Lumber since 1974 and has managed the Farmington store since 1990.

First-time free programs
The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department encourages local residents to discover the benefits of recreation by participating in one of the many programs at Brewer Auditorium. To encourage participation, fees for first-time participants to programs such as senior exercise, adult volleyball, adult open gym volleyball and basketball, and other programs, will be waived Jan. 6-10.

Eagle Scout ceremony
Marty Pearsall Jr. of Garland was elevated to the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony recently at the Power Line Prowlers Snowmobile Club in Corinth. For his Eagle project, he constructed a portable concession stand for the town of Garland.
Don Crowell acted as master of ceremonies for the event and members of Boy Scout Troop 100 from Dover-Foxcroft presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Pearsall, 18, is the son of Marty Pearsall Sr. His grandparents are Mickey and Bill Pearsall Sr.
Pearsall will graduate from Dexter High School in the spring and plans to attend Northwestern Ohio University.
Holden
Technical services manager
Jeffrey McBurnie of Holden has been appointed technical services manager for Soil Preparation Inc., a Plymouth-based advanced alkaline stabilization and composting facility.
Before starting his position with SPI, McBurnie served as chief operator and laboratory director for the Brewer Water District and as a training and special projects specialist for the Brunswick-based Maine Rural Water Association.
A licensed professional engineer and Class IV water system operator, McBurnie graduated from the University of Maine in 1982 and was an assistant professor in the University of Maine’s bioresource engineering department. He earned a master’s degree in agricultural engineering from Texas A&M University.
