Richardson resume inaccurate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Tennessee State coach Nolan Richardson III, who resigned this week after bringing a handgun on campus, submitted a resume with an inaccuracy about his academic record before being hired.

“It was brought to our attention earlier this past fall 2002, that there was an inaccuracy,” athletic director Teresa Lawrence Phillips said Friday. “I received an e-mail from an internal source, but at that same time coach Richardson did go over to Human Resources … and he made some corrections in his file.”

Richardson took steps to correct the error in October, along with a related entry in the university’s media guide. That resume and media guide said Richardson earned a bachelor’s degree from Langston University in 1987, while he actually graduated in 1995.

“It was determined that coach Richardson had a bachelor’s degree before accepting his position as head basketball coach, which was the only degree that was needed for the position,” Phillips said.

Richardson, 38, is the son of former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson. He resigned Wednesday, after a Christmas night argument with assistant coach Hosea Lewis about why only four players showed up for practice.
