MMA, Knights defeat Spartans

CASTINE – Julia Knights of Brookton had 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners past the visiting Castleton State Spartans 71-60 in women’s college basketball action Sunday.

Erinne Magee of Levant had 16 points and Meghann Burnett added 14.

Andi Kaufman scored 22 to lead the Spartans.

MMA is now 3-0 in the conference while Castleton State is 3-1.

Women’s Hockey

Maine garners win, tie

At Orono, Maine swept BC with a 5-0 win on Sunday after a 3-3-overtime tie on Saturday.

In Saturday’s game, Jarin Sjorgen scored Maine’s first goal with assist from Naomi Smethurst and Meagan Aarts while Nicole Munro scored the second goal. Karen Droog netted the third and final goal for the Black Bears with assists going to Morgan Janusc and Aarts. Lara Smart made 22 saves on 25 shots.

Lindsey Bazzone and Jaclyn Kryzak each scored a goal for Boston College while Alaina Clark scored the game-tying goal in the third period. Jerri Sanders, Jesica Tychsen, Kristin Blundo each recorded assists while Alison Quandt stopped 17 of 20 shots.

In Sunday’s game, Meagan Aarts scored two goals and had an assist to lead the 6-7-3 Black Bears to the win.

Tristan Desmet also scored two goals while Jarin Sjogren, Rebecca Culver and Andrea Steranko picked up the assists. Karen Droog scored with an assist from Katie Hartley while Dawn Froats made stopped 18 of 18 shots.

Lisa Davis made 2 saves on 29 shots for 7-8-3 Boston College.

At Machias, Phillip Munro scored 25 points to keep the Clippers on top of the College of St. Joseph’s.

MMA splits weekend games

At Castine, the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners came back from an 81-65 loss to Johnson State College Saturday with a 78-54 win over Castleton State College Sunday.

On Sunday, Matt Clement had 30 points and 10 rebounds while fellow Lawrence High alumnus Jed Johnson contributed 23 points and 23 rebounds. Skowhegan’s B.J. Dunlap had 11 points. Jon Newland made 10 assists.

Sean Manovill and Joale Leichtman scored 12 and 10 points, respectively for Johnson State.

On Saturday, 6-foot-5 center Patrick Glover was 5-for-5 from 3-point range and finished with 31 points to lead Johnston State past the Mariners.

Leo Zolotas scored 22 points and Jason Allen added 15.

For MMA, Clement had 26 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson had 18 points and 17 rebounds.
