RUMFORD – Bethel native David Chamberlain moved a step closer to earning a spot on the U.S. World Championship cross country ski team Thursday with a second-place finish in the U.S. National Championship 1.3K Sprint finals held at Black Mountain.

Chamberlain, who competes for the Maine Winter Sports Center Continental Team, finished second behind Carl Swenson and edged defending sprint champ Lars Flora. After placing fourth in Tuesday’s 10K classic race, fifth in the 10K freestyle and 12th in the 30K freestyle, Chamberlain is expected to receive consideration for the U.S. team that will compete in Italy next month.
