Accused Colby student receives financial aid

WATERVILLE – Colby College has provided financial aid to make up for a private scholarship lost by a student accused of sexually assaulting a female student.

Kevin Millien’s scholarship was revoked and he was banned from campus housing when a college judicial board ruled against him in October.

In November, Millien was granted financial aid because the loss of the scholarship changed his finances, so he will be able to complete his senior year, said Melissa Hewey, a lawyer for Colby.

“What that means is that he will be able to complete his studies and have enough money to live off campus,” said M. Michaela Murphy, Millien’s lawyer.

Millien’s lawsuit, filed in December, argues that Colby disregarded its procedures when it permitted an appeal of the initial verdict.

Authorities have not decided whether to present possible criminal charges to a grand jury, said Evert Fowle, district attorney for Kennebec and Somerset counties.

Stephen Collins, a Colby spokesman, declined to speak directly about Millien’s situation.
