PENOBSCOT VALLEY CONFERENCE CLASS A-B CHAMPIONSHIPS
Time, site: Saturday, 11 a.m.; Mount Desert Island High School
Last season’s champion: Old Town
Teams competing (in order of competition): John Bapst, Nokomis, Bangor, Caribou, Hermon, Presque Isle, Foxcroft, Brewer, Old Town, Ellsworth, Bucksport, MDI, Hampden
Teams to watch: Bangor, Brewer, Old Town, Caribou
Outlook: This is essentially the same lineup as last week’s Big East Conference championships, including Big East champion Bangor, and teams will again use the PVCs as a tune-up for the Jan. 28 Eastern Maine championships. Old Town placed second in last week’s Big East competition and Brewer, which was knocked down to fourth because of a point deduction, will be gunning to get back on top. The Witches have been the PVC runner-up for three straight years. Houlton, one of the top Class B teams in Eastern Maine, will not participate because of injuries.
Notes: The doors will open to the public at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Each team will perform its routine in the preliminary round; the top 50 percent of the teams plus ties will advance to the final round. Awards will be given for the champion and runner-up. The Class C-D championships were held last week with Orono winning the competition.
