Shires slip past Eagles Freshman Socoby scores 23 to pace Houlton

ELLSWORTH – Mark Socoby hit a short jumper with 45 seconds left Friday night, giving Houlton the lead for good on its way to a 53-48 schoolboy basketball victory over Ellsworth.

Socoby, a freshman, led all scorers with 23 points. Dustin Edwards scored 12 for Houlton.

Andy Tracy paced a balanced Ellsworth attack with 13 points. Joey Dewitt and Matt Wood contributed 10 points each.

Tracy finished with 20 points, a game-high, for the winners. John Garrett-Young notched 10.

At Millar Arena in Houlton, Kyle Maynard collected three goals and an assist to spark the Crusaders of Bangor.

Brian Leighton, Dave Sawyer and Zac Grenier each had a goal plus an assist for 4-7 John Bapst. Kim Meagher added a goal while Reuben Thibodeau, Tyler Cyr and Matt Holmes dished out an assist apiece. Jamie Hardy made 19 saves on 20 shots.

Josh Desmardis scored off a pass from Derek McGillicuddy for the 1-8 Minutemen of Millinocket. Jay Kim stopped 33 of 40 shots.

Correction: In Houlton’s boys basketball victory over Ellsworth published in Saturday’s paper, the timing of the final Houlton baskets was reported incorrectly. Mark Socoby hit a basket with a minute, 20 seconds left in the game to put the Shiretowners ahead for good. With 40 seconds to go, Danny Bartlett scored to pad Houlton’s margin to three points.
