Buddy Leavitt of Guilford went to the University of Maine as a walk-on in 2001 wanting to pursue the highest level of basketball possible.
Now, in the hope of furthering his basketball career and possibly pursuing physical therapy as an academic major, Leavitt has announced his intention to transfer to Husson College in Bangor this semester.
UMaine men’s basketball coach John Giannini made the announcement Monday.
“Buddy has been a wonderful person for me to coach and a contributor to our program,” Giannini said. “Husson College is accustomed to being a nationally elite program in NAIA basketball and I know Buddy can help them stay at that level. He is an excellent shooter and a dedicated player.”
Husson coach Warren Caruso declined to comment on Leavitt’s situation until he is officially enrolled at Husson. That is expected to happen today.
Leavitt, a former star at Piscataquis High in Guilford, redshirted last season at UMaine. He appeared in eight games as a freshman this season for the Black Bears.
Leavitt, a 6-foot-6 perimeter player who also likely will be used inside at Husson, averaged 1.4 points per game, scoring a career-best nine points on 3-for-3 3-point shooting in a Nov. 23 win over UMaine-Fort Kent.
He led PCHS to the Eastern Maine Class C championship as a senior in 2001, averaging 21.1 points and 9.5 rebounds, and was a NEWS All-Maine third-team selection.
McIntosh to attend Husson
Annie McIntosh of New Gloucester has announced she will pursue her education and her basketball career at Husson College in Bangor.
McIntosh, a 6-foot-1 center at Eastgate Christian Academy in Pownal, is averaging 19.4 points, 14.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 4.0 steals this season. She has helped her team post a 54-9 regular-season record, having played since her eighth-grade year.
“Annie is hardworking, self-motivated, and dedicated,” said Eastgate Christian coach Ron Giasson. “She has pushed herself to get better.”
McIntosh has logged more than 1,300 points and 1,200 rebounds at ECA.
Husson has been a guard-oriented team the last couple of seasons, thus the Braves will welcome a seasoned post player.
“She is a tremendously talented young lady who will have an immediate impact on our program,” said Husson coach Harold Williams. “We are extremely excited about her continuing her education and playing career at Husson College.”
