McLaughlin, Stearns hand Penquis first loss

MILO – Stearns rallied from an eight-point deficit at the end of the first half, tied it after the third quarter and held off a six-point Penquis surge in the final two minutes Monday to earn a 48-47 schoolboy basketball victory.

The Minutemen handed the Patriots their first loss and avenged a loss in their first meeting at Millinocket.

Kevin McLaughlin scored 17 points, all coming in the second half, to spark the comeback for the Minutemen. Derek DiFrederico chipped in with 16 points.

Dustin Perkins scored 13 points for Penquis and Steven Kissell added 11.

At Alfond Arena in Orono, Tyler Pelkey scored three goals, including the game-winner 49 seconds into overtime, as the Minutemen edged the Red Riots.

All three Pelkey goals came off assists from Drew Somers. George Surette added two goals for 2-8 Stearns of Millinocket. Nick Simon stopped 36 of 40 shots.

Dylan Huckestein powered 4-8 Orono with two goals. Tom Smyth had a goal and an assist and Joe Fullwood contributed a goal. Anthony Hegstrom made 16 saves on 21 shots.

Presque Isle 4, Foxcroft 1

At Presque Isle, Sam Shaw and Trevor Graves each scored a goal and had an assist to help lead Presque Isle to victory.

Robert Gartley and Tom Gregg had a goal each while Ben Sirois recorded an assist. Travis Shaw faced 21 shots and made 20 saves for the 9-2 Wildcats.

Mike Freese scored the goal for 1-8 Foxcroft while Derek Smith had the assist. Dan Perkins and John Cottell combined for 25 saves on 29 shots.
