Rabies clinic
A low-cost rabies clinic for Alton and Argyle pet owners will be held 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Alton Municipal Building. The law requires vaccination of all dogs and cats. Animals must be at least 12 weeks old, not pregnant and on a leash or in a carrier.
Bangor
Peace Corps information
There will be a Peace Corps informational meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at Bangor Public Library. Recruiter Joshua Anchors, a Peace Corps volunteer who served in Zimbabwe, and representative from the New England Regional Peace Corps office, will provide information and answer questions about the application process.
More than 163,000 Americans have served in 135 countries since President John F. Kennedy signed the order creating the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. Peace Corps assignments include working to help fight hunger, bringing clean water to communities, teaching, helping to start small businesses, and helping to stop the spread of AIDS.
Benefits include international and grass-roots development experience, travel, adventure, medical and dental care, housing, a monthly stipend, 24 vacation days a year and a readjustment allowance after completing service. Training in language, customs and culture is provided.

Tree of Hope winner
Denis Cranson, executive director of Eastern Maine AIDS Network, announced that Earl Robinson was the winner of the fifth annual Tree of Hope fundraiser. His entry was a fully lighted tree decorated with more than $2,500 in handmade European ornaments.
Cranson extends his thanks to everyone who participated in the event, which raises funds to help provide services to families served by the AIDS network in Penobscot, Aroostook and Piscataquis counties.
Low-cost dental clinic
The University of Maine System offers a low-cost dental hygiene clinic to the public from September to April. All dental hygiene services are provided, including oral exams, dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, athletic mouth guards and x-rays. Fire Department annual ball
The Bangor Fire Department’s Hose 5 Fire Museum will hold the seventh annual Firemen’s Valentine’s Ball from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Bangor Banquet and Conference Center. TV 50th anniversary
On the night of its 50th anniversary, WABI-TV 5 will take a look back at its history when it presents “50 Years of Great TV” 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. The 90-minute local retrospective will emphasize the station’s early years of local programming, news and commercial production.
Highlights will include:
. Bozo the Clown performing live in area communities circa 1962, and a visit with the man who played Bozo then.
. Local commercials of the past, including a 1950s gubernatorial campaign message for the station’s owner and founder, Horace A. Hildreth; an early local commercial for Coca-Cola from young station announcer George Hale; and Maine-based singer-songwriter Jud Strunk extolling the virtues of a Maine vacation in the early 1970s.
. Historical news footage, including President John F. Kennedy’s appearance at the University of Maine; man on the street interviews, with local reactions to major events.
. Clips from memorable network programs of the past.
WABI-TV 5 News anchors Craig Colson and Sharon Pelletier will serve as program hosts. The show kicks off a yearlong celebration of the station’s golden anniversary.

Record keeping workshop
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold a Basic Record Keeping – Part 1 and Part 2 workshop for home-based business owners 6-9 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 3 and 10, at the Penobscot County Extension Office, 307 Maine Ave., Bangor.
The two-part series with presenter James McConnon will help business owners learn the basic principles of single entry record keeping, and how to apply those principles.

Molly Molasses
As part of the Bangor Reads! celebration, the portraits of Molly Molasses, Sarah Molasses and tribal Gov. John Neptune will be displayed in the reading room of Bangor Public Library. It marks the first time all three oil paintings have been displayed together publicly. The portraits are on loan from the Tarratine Club.
Molly Molasses and Neptune are mentioned in Henry David Thoreau’s “The Maine Woods,” this year’s Bangor Reads! selection. Thoreau visited Neptune on his second trip to Maine.
Of his third trip to Maine, Thoreau wrote, “We had hardly left the steamer when we passed Molly Molasses in the street. As long as she lives, the Penobscots may be considered extant as a tribe.”
The portrait of Sarah Molasses recently returned to Bangor after a yearlong exhibit at the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor.
Conservation banquet
The Penobscot County and Soul Conservation District, based in Bangor, will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Scotty’s Restaurant in Newport. Maine humorist-storyteller Clyde Folsom will provide entertainment. Other activities include a silent auction, door prizes and slide show highlighting conservation activities. Tickets are $10. Valentine dance
The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the father-daughter Valentine Dance planned for 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Brewer Auditorium. Registrations are limited to 425, and will be accepted on a first-paid basis with Brewer residents receiving priority through Jan. 31.

Youth bowling
The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is planning a youth bowling program 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 25-April 1, at Bangor-Brewer Bowling Lanes.
The program is for pupils in grades 1-8, with three divisions. Participants will bowl two strings a week and receive tips and instruction as an introduction to candlepin bowling.

Books and fries
Children in the eighth grade and under who sign up for a library card at Brewer Public Library will receive a small order of fries from the Brewer Burger King. City Council resolves
Brewer High School senior Heather Clark was recognized by the City Council recently for earning national ranking as a runner in cross country and track competitions.
Cadette Girl Scouts Sarah Hodgins, Abbie Armstrong, Tata MacLeod, Ashley Austin and Sarah Taylor were commended for earning the Girl Scout Silver Award.
The Brewer High School football team was honored for completing a successful 2002 season and earning a place in the conference playoffs for the first time in 30 years. Players are Michael Arrico, Sean Collins, Nick Fox, Matt Knowles, Tony Lorenz, Eric Trask, Joe Chase, Spencer Dunbar, Scott Hatch, Tim Largay, Jeremiah Richter, Matt Whalen, Josh Caldwell, Seth Emerson, Travis Kimball, Jason Littlefield and Shawn Sutherland; coaches are Dana Corey, Josh Emmett, Ben Gargan, Ed Ortego and John Roberts.
Pauline E. Rand, who died Dec. 22, was remembered for community service, including her work with the Brewer Library Association, the Parent-Teachers Association, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, the Brewer Republican City Committee and active membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Leo J. DeRoche Sr., who died Dec. 20, was remembered for his service in the Korean War and for 30 years with the Public Works Department.
Also, the council approved the “adopt a hydrant” program as a way of assisting Brewer firefighters and the water department. Participants will shovel snow away from a fire hydrant that may be buried in a fresh snowfall to make sure officials have access to it if needed.
The city of Brewer has approximately 340 hydrants.

Milford
The Pine Tree Snowmobile Club’s Super Bowl Day Poker Run takes place Sunday, Jan. 26, at the clubhouse on Outer Call Road. Registration is at 10 a.m., and the run at 11 a.m. Prizes include cash, 100 gallons of fuel oil, car-wash coupons and gift certificates.

Father-daughter dance
Tickets are available for the Old Town Recreation Department’s annual Father-Daughter Valentine Dance, set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The event will include dancing, snacks and door prizes. The hall will be open at 6 p.m. for those who want pictures taken. Cove Brook Watershed
The Cove Brook Watershed Council will hold its first membership meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at St. Gabriel’s Columbian Hall, 445 Main St. All are welcome.
After a beef stew dinner, salmon biologist and author Ed Baum will present a lecture on the history of salmon in the Penobscot River region.
The Cove Brook Watershed Council is a nonprofit organization formed by local citizens in 2001 to conserve the Winterport brook.
