ROCKPORT – Eric Flaim, a silver medalist in speed skating at the 1988 and 1994 Olympics, will be in Rockport to highlight a special Speedskating Expo at the MidCoast Recreation Center.
The event will be 10:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26.
Flaim will be the first Olympic medal-winning skater to visit the new facility. He is president of the Northeast Speedskating Association.
Brian Pierce of Camden is chairing a group of more than 20 area skaters interested in forming a speed-skating club on the midcoast, using the new National Hockey League-sized rink.
The January expo will be free to skaters and the public. It is sponsored by the Maine Coast Skaters Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting skating in all its forms, and the recreation center.
The two-hour event will feature demonstrations by experienced speed skaters on basic skills, drills and races. The public will then be invited to try the sport.
