Calais, MA Lynx in split Blue Devils post win in girls game

CALAIS – Good shooting was the key for the Calais girls and Mattanawcook boys basketball teams in a doubleheader Tuesday – and the inablility to stop the opposition’s offense was the downfall for the Lynx girls and Blue Devil boys at the high school gym here.

The Calais girls shot 64.5 percent from the floor and hit 17 of 23 shots from the line in a 61-48 victory over Mattanawcook of Lincoln, while the Lynx boys sank four of their nine 3-point tries in the second and third quarters en route to a 64-50 victory over the Devils.

In the girls game, the Blue Devils (10-5) hit their first six shots to open the game, raced out to a 14-2 lead, and never looked back. Danielle O’Brien paced Calais with 20 points and 8-for-8 shooting.

“Our team is either on or we’re not and tonight we came out hitting and we stuck with it all game,” said senior Crystal Martin, who went 10-for-10 at the free-throw line and finished with 17 points.

The Devils played much of the game in a fast-paced man-to-man defense and press, but they went to zone for a stretch in the first half. The Lynx (10-6) went on a 10-0 run powered by Jaide Littlefield, who put back a rebound to make it 18-12 and completed a conventional 3-point play. After a Codi Slike jumper, Littlefield hit another put-back to make it 20-17.

O’Brien stopped the run with a rebound and basket. Littlefield did the same on the other end, but Danielle Feck of Calais knocked down a 3-pointer and scored off an Emily Smith steal. The Devils took an eight-point lead into halftime and went on a 10-0 run in the third to seal the win.

“I think they took us by surprise with those first seven points or so,” Mattanawcook coach Terri Thornton said. “The Feck girl and [Smith] threw in a couple of 3-pointers that really hurt us. … We didn’t recover quick enough [on defense]. They reversed the ball well and that hurt us.”

Feck finished with 14 points and was 5-for-8 from the field. Slike and Gulesian each scored 12 points and Littlefield added 10.

In the boys game, the 11-5 Lynx opened up the game in the second quarter after clinging to a 21-20 lead.

Mattanawcook’s Wayne Berry, who scored a team-high 16 points and had 10 rebounds, made two baskets in that stretch and Matt Malone hit two big 3-pointers and scored all nine of his points in the second.

Mattanawcook had a shaky one-point lead with 2:16 left in the first half. But in a span of about two minutes, MA’s Jon Carney scored a fast-break basket, Berry did the same and then put back a rebound, and Malone hit his first 3-pointer from the top of the key. Jon Smith ended the run with a jumper for the Devils, but Malone drained another long-range shot and Dylan Hanscom made two free throws.

“We came out, threw the ball up the court good, passed good, looked for the open man,” Berry said. “We were in the right spots at the right time.”

Devil Josh Berube (16 points) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but Mattanawcook’s Nathan Cousineau scored all eight of his points in the third to keep Calais at bay.

Malone and Carney each contributed nine points for MA and Carney had eight rebounds.

The Blue Devils played a 3-2 zone in an attempt to get out on MA’s shooters, but the Lynx went 4-for-9 from 3-point range.

“We just wanted to beat them from the outside and [Malone] made two or three [3-pointers] that really hurt us down the stretch,” said Calais coach Keith Ogden. “We were trying to make them beat us from the outside. We did everything inside right.”

Chris Woodside, who scored eight points in the second quarter to help get Calais (7-9) to within one point, finished with 14.
